03 - VBOX to PC Telemetry

Connection to PC

The telemetry module picks up the RS232 data from the VBOX via an RF link and makes it available for a remote computer. The remote computer running the supplied VBOX Tools software can show live VBOX data. Using the supplied Report Generator software the data can be processed live so that the results of particular tests can be displayed.

The Report Generator software is very flexible so most test scenarios can be specified. The protocol of the VBOX RS232 signal is described here for anyone who wishes to use this data in another program or third-party hardware.

Connection to VBOX

The telemetry module can be used with VBOX telemetry in two ways. The first way is as a radio transmitter for sending VBOX telemetry data to another telemetry module which is connected to a PC. The second way is as a radio receiver to receive DGPS correction data from a Racelogic Base Station.

The VBOX transmits serial data from the socket marked “SERIAL” or “RS232” out through the telemetry module for reception by second radio connected to PC. The VBOX should use the telemetry radio marked S (server), the telemetry computer should use the C (client) radio.

Only one connection is required as power for the Telemetry unit comes from the VBOX via a 5-way Lemo to 5-way Lemo cable.

2.4 GHz Radios

A VBOX telemetry pair of radios (RLRTM24VBT) allows a VBOX to communicate with a laptop running VBOX Tools. Communication can be bi-directional so the laptop will be able to change the VBOX setup as well as receive live data.

The telemetry module can only transmit the eight default GPS channels and up to 2 CAN channels at up to 100 Hz. For an increased number of channels, reduce the serial output rate accordingly.

VBOX to PC Telemetry Radio Options

  • RLRTM24VBT – VBOX to VBOX Tools Radio System (EU Spec)
  • RLRTM24VBTJP – VBOX to VBOX Tools Radio System (Japan Spec)
  • RLRTM24VBTU – VBOX to VBOX Tools Radio System (Rest of world Spec)

Please see radio overview for details specs.

TM4 Radios (Legacy)

The telemetry module can only transmit the eight default GPS channels and up to 2 CAN channels when operating at 20 Hz. For an increased number of channels, reduce the serial output rate accordingly. Operation above 20 Hz is not recommended.
